About Frøvækst Øst

Denmark is the world’s greatest exporter of grass seed including nearly 80% of the EU white clover seed production and 70% of the entire world production of spinach seed.

In 2001, Danish seed production covered nearly 83,000 hectares – of which nearly 20,000 hectares were located in Storstrøm’s county and 16,000 hectares in Vestsjælland’s county. Thus, close to 40% of Danish seed production is located in the regions of Vestsjælland and Storstrøm.

The main part of Danish seed companies have production in the region of Vestsjælland and Storstrøm – five out of six field seed companies are located here with their production facilities. The seed growers are organized in Danish Seed Growers organization, which has local representation all over Denmark.

Research in field and garden seed production takes place at the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, which is situated at the research center Flakkebjerg at Slagelse.
